On Tuesday, We have the IPL 2024 complete squad after auction, history was made as Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) acquired the services of Australian pacer Mitchell Starc for a record bid of INR 24.75 crores, making him the most expensive player in IPL history. This year’s auction saw two players break the 20 crore mark for the first time in the cash-rich T20 cricket league. Before Starc, his Australian teammate Pat Cummins was acquired by Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) for INR 20.50 crore. At the last Indian Premier League (IPL) auction, Punjab Kings (PBKS) made headlines by acquiring the services of all-rounder Sam Curran for a whopping INR 18.50 crore.
This made him the most expensive player in the IPL before the 2022 auction. The auction saw a total of 332 players from 13 different countries up for bidding, out of which 216 were Indian players. However, after player retention, releases, and trades, only 77 slots were left to be filled by the 10 teams combined, which included 30 overseas player quotas.
During the auction, a total of 72 players were picked up by the 10 teams, with only Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) and Rajasthan Royals (RR) opting not to go for their full quota of 25 players. However, all 30 overseas players’ berths were accounted for by the end of the auction.
Apart from Australian fast bowlers Mitchell Starc and Pat Cummins, several other players also managed to command high premiums of 10 crores or more. For instance, New Zealand all-rounder Daryl Mitchell was picked up by Chennai Super Kings for INR 14.00 crores, Harshal Patel was acquired by PBKS for INR 11.75 crores, Alzarri Joseph went to Royal Challengers Bangalore for INR 11.50 crores, while Gujarat Titans picked up Spencer Johnson for INR 10 crores at the auction.
